After a few years break I decided to retrain myself for first aid. I choose a weekend course organized by Slovak mountain rescue service Horska Sluzba.
The training took place in the Mala Fatra in Vratna Valley in local headquarter of this organization. The cost was 110 EUR which covers 2 days of training, accommodation for 2 nights and full board.
The course started on Friday evening with theory session. Saturday was a whole day practical training in 4 groups covering different topics like first aid, resuscitation, transport of injured and evacuation of climbers in the wall. Staff was very patient and explained topics in details, open to additional questions and clarification. Evening was again theory sessions and later less formal mingling with other course attendants and exchange of experience and stories.
Sunday was our “exam” day. We were split in small 3-4 person groups and had to go through 8 unknown simulated accidents as an opportunity to utilize our newfound knowledge. In case of mistakes these were pointed out and correct course of action described.
I sincerely recommend this course to anyone, wonderful, engaged people and very important skills – not only for climbers.
