Ice forest in the Mala Fatra

So far I have not visited the Mala Fatra, mountain range in central Slovakia, so I eagerly joined a group of friends going there on January 14th. Our goal was to climb Klak – a popular tourist destination peak of 1351 m. It can be accessed via different routes from nearby villages. To make our trip more interesting we selected a different descend route. Despite rainy morning in Bratislava when we got to the mountains the weather was much better.

We set out from Cicmanskie Razcestie 560m – the green route start by the road between Fackov and Cicmany village. At first there was no snow despite frosty morning. Our path continuously led up. As we gained altitude the forest gradually turned more white. Along the way we got up the Kosiarka peak 1107 m and followed a wooded ridge up towards Klak. Here wind and frost turned the trees into a fairytale setting. After getting to Maly Klak we changed to blue route to traverse under steep rocky slopes and get to Pod Klakom pass and on to the crowded summit. After a short rest and obligatory photos we continued down via green route to crossing Pod Skalou. Then we turned to yellow path down to Fackovske Sedlo where we finished our 7-hour march.
