The Dolomites – Marmolada
Before the Autumn rain I decided to use good weather and went to the Dolomites. I had never been there before. For a short, basically 2 day plus travel, trip I decided to go to Marmolada group and its highest peak Punta Penia 3343.
Joined by 2 friends we arrived in the late afternoon to the Fedaia Passo where we left their car. Than by a shortest route 606 leading under the cable car we go to the Pian dei Fiacconi mountain hut where we stayed for the night. In the morning we move on, again selecting a shortest route, to the summit across the glacier. The weather was fine and we quickly covered the glacier to reach a short via ferrata leading to the easy summit ridge. Punta Penia is a popular peak and we met multiple teams on our way up. We stopped to make a few summit pictures and ate some food before descending. On our way down I had great Italian coffee in the hut. We were back on the parking late afternoon.
Key notes:
1 Accommodation has to be booked in advance – 15 Eur for the night or 10 in case of emergency sleeping in the dining area on provided mattresses

2 one can reach the hut by a cable car – 6 Eur. Last one leaves at 5 pm
3 Every route to Punta Penia requires via ferrata and glacier equipment
